Aids and equipment

The MAC Scheme can help pay for aids and equipment that are necessary and reasonably required to support your recovery or to increase your independence.

Your treatment and rehabilitation providers may visit you in hospital or at home to assess your needs and will make recommendations to TIO MAC.

Examples of aids and equipment include.  but are not limited to:

  • wheelchairs
  • assistive devices (Crutches, walking frames, shower chair, commode)
  • home modality equipment (TENS machine, laser for scarring)
  • hoist and positioning equipment
  • pressure care equipment (Pressure cushion or mattress)
  • prosthetics and orthotics
  • continence equipment and supplies
  • electric bed and mattress
  • showering and toileting equipment
  • environmental control units and air conditioning
  • communication and assistive Information Technology (IT) equipment
  • personal alarm system systems for falls risk clients
  • optical
  • aids and equipment for exercise and fitness.

Any aids or equipment recommended by your treatment or rehabilitation provider up to a value of $100 can be bought without needing pre-approval from your case manager. MAC will reimburse you for these expenses when you send through a receipt of purchase.

For aids and equipment over $100, your treatment or rehabilitation provider will need to make a formal request to TIO MAC with information about your condition and how the intended item or equipment will assist in your recovery or the management of your injury.

For larger items such as wheelchairs, pressure cushions, mattresses, hoists and electric beds, TIO MAC or your treatment or rehabilitation provider may suggest a trial of the item prior to its purchase, to ensure it is appropriate, or rental of equipment for short term use.

Maintenance, repair and replacement

The MAC Scheme may replace or cover the costs to modify your existing aids and equipment when a request is made by your treatment or rehabilitation provider.

It is expected that you will take reasonable care to prevent the loss, theft, or damage of aids and equipment funded by the MAC Scheme.

TIO MAC may periodically review your needs for aids and equipment to ensure that you have the items that are reasonable and necessary for your circumstances.

If you have any questions regarding aids or equipment, please contact your TIO MAC case manager.

Funding approval for equipment

Your TIO MAC case manager will keep you informed of the approval process and the progress of any formal requests for new aids and equipment or maintenance, repair or replacement of existing equipment.

After TIO MAC has all the necessary information and costings to assess the request, you will receive a formal letter advising of the decision to approve or not approve the requests.
