MACC funded research undertaken by Menzies School of Health Research is presented in the Pedestrian deaths and serious injuries report. The study analyses ten years of NT pedestrian crashes and outlines the key contributors to fatal and serious injuries across the Territory. Their report details 10 recommendations which Menzies suggest will have the greatest impact in reducing the severity of these accidents.
The research:
- Draws on 10 years of crash records, hospital admissions, and interviews with people who have professional and lived experience of pedestrian crashes to understand why they occur and how they can be prevented.
- Identifies major risk factors, including poor visibility, higher speed limits, alcohol involvement, and environments where pedestrians need to cross high-speed roads to access shops or bus stops.
- Highlights that a range of complex health and social factors contribute to people being on or near roads and at greater risk of pedestrian crashes.
