The Darwin Cup
Carnival is the Top End’s premier sporting event, attracting tens
of thousands of people from across the country.
MACC has been sponsoring
the provision of overnight car park security at the event since 2009. This
encourages people who drink too much to leave their car behind and find a safe
way home with less fear of their vehicle being stolen or vandalised.
MACC’s involvement in
the event complements NT Police enforcement with random breath testing, a free
bus service and TV advertising specifically targeting the event. The aim of the
program is to make sure people do not drink and drive after a day at the Darwin
Statistics from 2009
to 2014 indicate the program as a whole is creating behavioural change – at
least at the Cup Day event. In 2014, only three people were charged with drink
driving compared with 20 in 2009.
The number of vehicles
left in the Darwin Turf Club car park overnight on Cup Day 2014 was estimated
to be around 300, compared with less than 18 vehicles left overnight in 2009.
